PCOS is now PMOS: what the name change means

PMOS stands for polyendocrine metabolic ovarian syndrome. Learn how it relates to PCOS and why you will see both names in apps and health information.

PMOS is the new name for the condition previously called PCOS. The name change was announced on May 12, 2026, according to the Endocrine Society.

If you have been searching for a PCOS app and found the word PMOS in Alure, you are in the right place. You will see both names while health information and services make the transition.

What do PCOS and PMOS stand for?

The Endocrine Society explains that the new name better reflects the condition’s hormonal and metabolic effects. The old name put the focus on ovaries and “cysts,” which did not describe the full experience of the condition.

The new name refers to the same condition. Seeing PMOS on a page does not, by itself, mean that you have received a different diagnosis.

Why does the name matter?

Names shape the questions people bring to an appointment. If a name sounds as though a condition concerns only one organ, it can be harder to know whether other concerns belong in the conversation.

You can use the change as a starting point for questions about your own experience. What should your care plan cover? Which changes should you bring up? What would you like to understand better at your next visit?

You do not need to learn every medical term before asking. Plain descriptions of what has changed and how it affects you are useful, too.

Why do health guides still say PCOS?

Older research, guidelines and patient resources use the name that was current when they were written. Many people also still search for PCOS because that is the term they first heard.

Monash University’s guideline hub now uses both names and connects readers to the international evidence-based guideline. When looking up a topic, trying both “PCOS” and “PMOS” can help you find relevant material. Check who published it, when it was updated, and which evidence it links to.

An older title alone does not tell you whether a resource is useful. The source and the recommendations matter more than whether the wording has caught up with the name change.
